Pirate Lab January 2018

About this meeting

Pirate Labs can be seen as incubators for pirate projects. This is the perfect place for people to propose their ideas and to launch new projects.

If you have any ideas of projects, or want to help other projects, please do come!

We will use the meeting guidelines proposed by the internal democracy group. Please have a look at them before coming to the lab :)

To-do list

  1. Confirm venue
  2. Create facebook event (then destroy facebook) Facebook event

Preparation

Lab starts at 2 pm. For those who want to lunch together before the lab, they can coordinate on the following pad:

https://pad.pirateparty.be/p/Piratelab2018-January

Suggestions for the agenda happen on this pad. We strongly advise you to read the pad before coming to this lab!

Reporting

7 people were present at this lab.

We started with a short roundtable where people said what they wanted to discuss today. However, we decided to not split.

Brunch feedback

The brunch was very nice, we got to meet some new people interested in the Pirate Party. We were about 12 people for the lunch and for the drink (not always the same, though). We were expecting more people, especially from Brussels. The size of the room gave the feeling that we were very few.

A solution would be to organise this kind of informal event more frequently (maybe two or three times a year). Maybe book a smaller room, also. Finally, we should make these events more like PR (public relations) events, so that people who didn't come would think they missed something.

Regarding the organisation, pirates in charge felt a bit on their own. Also, arrows indicating the room were not clear at all, and some people couldn't find it without help... We should make it clear that we want good signage from the venue, otherwise we would bring our own.

Some are thinking of doing a BBQ in June. We shall discuss this during next lab.

GA

Potential Topics

This would define the purpose of the GA:

  • Website : we would like to change the main page of the website, a workgroup is working on it
  • Elections :
    • Who's running for the elections (citizen lists vs pirate lists) ?
    • Dividing the money among crews
    • Citizen lists : what's the position of the Pirate Party ?
      • But... do we really have legitimacy to talk about citizen lists ?
  • Statutes : Christophe Cop will clean unused stuff, by trying to remove the minimum
    • Maybe contact Fred as he worked on the statutes last time we changed them
  • Roles : treasurer, Mermaid vzw, ...
  • Report : finance, Mermaid vzw, crews ?, ...

For the date, we choose the 22nd April (one week before a lab for the follow-up).

Question: Are we ready for a GA ? We have no statutes, etc. In the other hand, we could say that we would never be ready for a GA...

Organisation

Where and how do we prepare this ? -> Open and transparent tools are not optional here.

  • Loomio : for the organisation, timeline of the process
  • Wiki : for the documentation, the event, ...
  • Pads : for translation, reporting during the GA, etc.

Here is a proposal for the process:

  1. Publication of the proposals
  2. Debate about the proposals
  3. Decisions at the GA
  4. Follow up of the decisions

Remarks:

  • Deadlines for these steps must be very clear.
  • Discussions do not happen during the voting session of the GA, but before AND after.
  • Follow up is an integral part of the process, because:
    1. If a proposal is rejected, we need to resolve conflict, rework the proposal, by respect for those who made the proposal for instance
In other words, the follow up is the place for those who rejected the proposal to become constructive and to try to improve things
    2. If a proposal is accepted, we must discuss the details, apply the decision, etc.

Secrecy vs Transparency

Some complain that there is too much secrecy in some crews, which doesn't allow the other pirates to know what happens. This might happen also during the discussions around the GA.

Maybe add a condition to the right to vote during a GA: attending at least one preparation meeting?

  • You can only subscribe during preparation meetings?

Newsletter

Proposal to send the newsletter each month : https://www.loomio.org/d/PF9IUdlM/newsletter/22

In short: we keep the same format as the two previous newsletters, that is:

  1. Introduction (big event, ongoing topics on loomio, ongoing projects)
  2. Last articles on the website (if any)
  3. Next pirate events

Process:

  1. At the beginning of the month, we start a pad with the text of the newsletter's intro.
  2. Then, we get feedback on loomio.
  3. Finally, we send the newsletter on the 15th.

Remarks:

  • Translations need to be done before the 15th
  • Crews' events must be published on the wiki before the 15th, otherwise they won't be in the newsletter

Website

Proposal is on loomio : https://www.loomio.org/d/Cx8tp4Qj/external-communication-of-ppbe/34

Slogan

  • Did we lose control ?
  • Did we lose our cape ?
  • Has our rudder been tampered with? => disagreeing on this, will be discussed on Loomio

Josse proposes to replace "from delegated party politics to horizontal" by "from vertical corruption-prone to horizontal"

Values

The values can refer to our wiki, but then we need to improve its content

Careful about Basic Income: we have a consensus about the fact UBI is interesting and should be explored, we don't have a consensus on more than that (when & where to implement, how much, etc). Also we need to say it's not a miracle solution.

Which values exactly? Where do we stop? Focus on transparency/democracy... and what enables empowerment.

  • Rethinking the banks
